Minecraft Math Adventure

Course Overview

This 13-lesson course uses Minecraft to teach 5th-grade math concepts aligned with Common Core Mathematics standards. Students will engage in fun, interactive activities that blend gaming with mathematical problem-solving.

Lesson Plan

1. City Planning – Survival Roads

Objective: Solve equations to plan and build roads in a Minecraft city.

Skills: Equation solving, spatial reasoning.
 
2. Classifying Quadrilaterals
 
Objective: Define, build, and classify different types of quadrilaterals in Minecraft.
 
Skills: Geometry, shape recognition.
 
3. Coordinate Planes in Minecraft
 
Objective: Plot points and draw lines using basic functions on a Minecraft coordinate plane.
 
Skills: Graphing, coordinate geometry
 
4. Volume World
 
Objective: Explore the concept of volume by building and measuring 3D structures.
 
Skills: Volume calculation, spatial reasoning
 
5. Fractions and Multiplication
 
Objective: Multiply numbers greater than, less than, or equal to 1 using Minecraft objects.
 
Skills: Fraction multiplication, number sense
 
6. Crafting Fractions
 
Objective: Use Minecraft crafting recipes to study and manipulate fractions.
 
Skills: Fraction operations, proportional reasoning
 
7. Fraction World
 
Objective: Explore fraction models and build a farm using fractional measurements.

8-12. The Decimal Dungeon (5-part series)
 
Objective: Navigate through a series of challenges, observing and building math models to escape the dungeon.
 
Skills: Decimal operations, problem-solving, model building.

13. Javelin Line Plots
 
Objective: Throw tridents (javelins) in Minecraft and track distances on a line plot.
