Course Description

This 1st-2nd grade reading and writing curriculum helps students focus on becoming reading & writing experts while preparing them for the next grade level. Students will learn the foundation reading skills of word recognition, vocabulary, transitional words, paragraph organization, basic comprehension skills, and reading strategies. They will also learn fundamental composition skills such as spelling, capitalization, sentence structures, punctuation, formatting, purposefully shaping, and controlling language, which will prepare them for school tests and exams.

Course Breakdown

Lesson 1 Review the N end blends nt, ng and nk and nd in words. Understand and use collective nouns. Read a story and talk about point of views of Characters.

Lesson 2 Review the ough and augh sounds. Use reflexive pronouns (e.g., myself, ourselves). Read a story and talk about the Main idea.

Lesson 3 Review the S end blends st,sk and sp in words. Form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs. Read a story and talk about the sequence of events.

Lesson 4 Review the Short o sound aw, awl, awk, alk. Produce, expand, and rearrange complete simple and compound sentences. Read a story and talk about the main characters.

Lesson 5 Review the l end blends lk,lt and ld in words. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.

Lesson 6 Review the “tch” final sound in words. Use an apostrophe to form contractions and frequently occurring possessives. Read a story and talk about the settings.

Lesson 7 Review the phonograms “ail and ain” in words. Demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings. Read a story and talk about the moral of the story.

Lesson 8 Review the phonograms “ock and oke” in words. Recognizing Abbreviations of common words. Read a story and talk about the key details.

Lesson 9 Review the phonograms, “ump and unk”. Learn about “Hyperbole” and their use in sentences. Read a story and talk about the “Genre” of the story.

Lesson 10 Review the “ine, ing and ink sounds in words. Practice “Active and passive voice in sentences. Read a story and talk about the events in the story.

Lesson 11 Review the “ot and op” sounds in words. Learn about the “Different types of Clauses”. Read a story and talk about the “Conclusion”.

Lesson 12 Review the “ell and all “sounds in words. Learn about “Articles” in sentences. Read a story and talk about the author’s point of view in the story.

Lesson 13 Review the “eat and ate” sounds in words. Learn about “Contractions” of words and use them in sentences. Read a story and predict the outcome of a passage in the story.

Lesson14 Review the “tion and sion” sounds in words. Learn about “Prepositions”. Read a story and identify cause and effect.

Lesson 15 Review the sounds of “air and are” in words. Learn about “Adverbs” and their use in sentences. Read and summarize a story.

About the teacher

Hello! My name is Miss Stella, and I’m so excited to meet you here and help you gain confidence in reading and writing.
I hold an English Bachelor degree and a Master of Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This is my 9th year of teaching English Language Arts.
I’m teaching 1st to 3rd graders in an elementary school right now, and I have worked as a high school ELA teacher before that.  My teaching philosophy is to see to every student’s unique needs and demands. I like to use a wide range of formative and summative class activities to closely monitor students’ growth. I am absolutely in love with what I do and I genuinely look forward to helping you in any way I could.
