Course Description

Throughout the 10 lessons, we will be writing both a short story / novel / narrative / creative piece of literature and informative essays. However, we will take time to address different elements of writing during each lesson. We will also be reading stories from “wordly wise” each lesson, discussing themes, vocabulary, relevance to real life experience, and other elements of literature.

Lesson 1: Organize information and ideas around a topic to plan and prepare to write. W.8.3

—Cite textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. R.L.8.1

Lesson 2: Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and point of view and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally and logically. W.8.3

—  Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text; analyze the impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone, including analogies or allusions to other texts. R.L.8.4

Lesson 3: Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, and reflection, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters. W.8.3

—Recount an event related to the theme, including details about character and setting. R.L.8.2(ext)

Lesson 4: Use a variety of transition words, phrases, and clauses to convey sequence, signal shifts from one time frame or setting to another, and show the

relationships among experiences and events. W.8.3

Lesson 5: Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to capture the action and convey experiences and events. W.8.3

Lesson 10: Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on the narrated experiences or events W.8.3

— Analyze how differences in the perspectives of the characters and the audience or reader create such effects as suspense or humor. R.L.8.6

About the teacher

Mr Ray , 7 years of teaching experience, worked at  local middle school as an English Language Arts Teacher . He taught 6th-12th grade students reading and writing for literature and informational texts. His teaching philosophy is to see to every student’s unique needs and demands. He like to use wide range of formative and summative class activities to closely monitor students’ growth. In 2017-2018, he worked with 22% on-grade-level students at the beginning of the school year. By the end of the year, the End Of Grade Exam data have shown that 64%  of his students have achieved on/above Grade level.
