Description

Does your child have trouble making presentations or speaking in class? Maybe the opposite and they like to talk all day? Is your child interested in joining a debate team or have passion for topics and like to speak out about it? If the above mentioned describes your child, then Friendly Conversations Speech and Debate Club is the right choice for them!

This class is designed to teach elementary and middle school students the fundamentals of public speaking and argumentation skills that will enable them to develop confidence, self-esteem, critical thinking skills, creativity, and leadership. Participants will have a chance to improve their communication skills in a safe and secure environment. The classes aim to equip children to structure arguments, prepare debate cases, research evidence, write rebuttal briefs, deliver speeches, and refute opponents. It will prepare them to join high school speech and debate teams in the future.

Students will be able to recognize, compare and contrast, identify, and deliver the three main types of formal speeches (narrative, informative, and persuasive). Students will also discover confidence in oral communication through storytelling. They will also employ imagination and personal interpretation while reading aloud previously written stories and prose.

Every Monday, 7:00 – 8:00 PM (Central Time), 20 lessons, 1/13/2020-6/1/2020) (no class on 2/17)

About the Teacher

Ms. Jimilee holds a Bachelors Degree in Speech Communications and Theatre. While in college, she competed nationally as a member of the debate team. She has spent the last 20 years working in live theatre as an actress, director, and designer. She also spent time in the classroom as a teacher of drama, speech, and debate for grades K-12.

During her time in education in Texas, she was a UIL coach for middle and high school one act play, and advanced to state for the 1st time is the school’s history. She also coached 3rd-6th grade storytelling, impromptu speaking, and oral interpretation, where the majority of her students took home medals. Her hobbies include golf, softball, cross-stitching, Greek mythology, and puzzles.
