Description

The 3rd-4th grade reading and writing curriculum is designed to teach students the tools and mechanics of English writing. Students will be able to develop various writing and reading skills developed with the advanced student in mind such as deciphering informational books, writing about history, informative writing, adding examples and details to essays, as well as writing an informative essay.

Knowledge and skills (What you’ll learn)

  • Students will learn about non-fiction , informational Books and the various types of writing.
  • Structure of an essay including introduction, thesis, body paragraphs and
    conclusion.
  • Write about History such as the Boston Tea Party, World War 2 and other important parts of history.
  • Write an informative essay paying close attention to the source of their findings.
  • Adding details and examples with a bibliography.
  • Understanding the Elements of a great story.
  • Drafting the informative essay : brainstorming, outlining, drafting.
  • Completion of the informative essay using editing and proofreading
    methods.

Week 1: Literacy W1 Topic introduction, opinion statement, supporting reasons  (trial class)

Week 2: Literacy W 2 Linking words and phrases, concluding statement and section.

Week 3: Literacy W 3 Informative/explanatory writing, topic writing

Week 4: Literacy W 4 Informative/explanatory writing, related information grouping

Week 5: Literacy W 4 Narratives writings with dialogue

Week 6: Literacy W 4 Narratives writings with descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings.

Week 7: Literacy W 4 Narratives writings with clear event sequences.

Week 8: Literacy W 5 Information gathering from print and digital sources, Note taking and

evidence sorting.

Week 9: Literacy W 5 Informational writing, Note taking and evidence sorting.

Week 10: Literacy W 5 Informational writing for specific audiences.

Week 11: Literacy W 5 Narrative writing for specific audiences.

Week 12: Reading Literature 1 key ideas and details.

About the teacher

Mr Ray , 7 years of teaching experience, worked at  local middle school as an English Language Arts Teacher . He taught 6th-12th grade students reading and writing for literature and informational texts. His teaching philosophy is to see to every student’s unique needs and demands. He like to use wide range of formative and summative class activities to closely monitor students’ growth. In 2017-2018, he worked with 22% on-grade-level students at the beginning of the school year. By the end of the year, the End Of Grade Exam data have shown that 64%  of his students have achieved on/above Grade level.
