Course Description

This class is designed to teach grade 6 students in the matters of English Reading and Writing.  Every week we will focus on 5 vocabulary prefixes/suffixes that will enable students to determine meaning of multiple words and increase their vocabulary.  During the course we will cover three main types of writing: Informational, Narrative or storytelling, and Opinion Writing. We will also spend some time reading different passages that are good examples of these types of writing,

Knowledge and skills (What you’ll learn)

  • Students will learn about non-fiction , informational Books and the various types of writing.
  • Structure of an essay including introduction, thesis, body paragraphs and
    conclusion.
  • Write about History such as the Boston Tea Party, World War 2 and other important parts of history.
  • Write an informative essay paying close attention to the source of their findings.
  • Adding details and examples with a bibliography.
  • Understanding the Elements of a great story.
  • Drafting the informative essay : brainstorming, outlining, drafting.
  • Completion of the informative essay using editing and proof reading
    methods.

Course Breakdown:

Throughout the 14 lessons, we will be writing both a short story / novel / narrative / creative piece of literature and informative essays. However, we will take time to address different elements of writing during each lesson. There will also be “short story” activities and SAT grammar practice exercises. Most of these lesson standards are a subset of these objectives .

-Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.

–  Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.

Lesson 1:Organize information and ideas around a topic to plan and prepare to write.

Lesson 2: Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and point of view and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally and logically.

Lesson 3: Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, and reflection, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters.

Lesson 4: Use a variety of transition words, phrases, and clauses to convey sequence, signal shifts from one time frame or setting to another, and show the relationships among experiences and events.

Lesson 5: Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to capture the action and convey experiences and events.

Lesson 6: Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on the narrated experiences or events.

Lesson 7: Develop and strengthen writing as needed by revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most significant for a specific purpose and audience.

Lesson 8: Organize information and ideas around a topic to plan and prepare to write.

Lesson 9: Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information into broader categories; include formatting, graphics, and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.

Lesson 10: Develop the topic with relevant, well-chosen facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples.

Lesson 11: Use appropriate and varied transitions to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among ideas and concepts.

Lesson 12: Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.

Lesson 13: Establish and maintain a formal style.

Lesson 14: Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the information or explanation presented.

About the teacher

Mr Ray , 7 years of teaching experience, worked at  local middle school as an English Language Arts Teacher . He taught 6th-12th grade students reading and writing for literature and informational texts. His teaching philosophy is to see to every student’s unique needs and demands. He like to use wide range of formative and summative class activities to closely monitor students’ growth. In 2017-2018, he worked with 22% on-grade-level students at the beginning of the school year. By the end of the year, the End Of Grade Exam data have shown that 64%  of his students have achieved on/above Grade level.
