Description

AMC 8 is a middle school math competition organized by the American Mathematical Association. It is designed to foster interest in mathematics and promote the development of problem-solving skills. The topics covered include number sense, number theory, estimation, counting, probability, pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry. This is an introduction course targeting mostly 3-5th graders who love math and had little or no AMC8 training before. The course will focus on problems as difficult as AMC8 questions 1 to 10.

Ms. Tan, Founder of Joy Education Consultant. Over 20 years of fortune 500 company working experience. Master in Chemical Engineering from Univ. of Colorado at Boulder. Ms. Tan has taught mathematics for elementary and middle school for 15 years. She taught contest math at local Chinese schools and Idea Math in Texas and helped lots of students improve their test scores. She is also a Girl Scout troop leader, various school and community events volunteer.

What is the AMC 8?
The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment.

The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course.

When is the AMC held?
The AMC 8 is in mid November.
