Ustar Writing Resource Series

Writing Resource (WR) includes six big sections:

1. The Writing Process

2.  The Forms of Writing

3. The Tools of Learning

4.  Basic Grammar and Writing

5. A Writer’s Resource

6.  Proofreader’s Guide

We focus on teaching section 2, 4, 6.

For lower grade level students such as grade 1,2,3, our teaching
order is section 4, 6, 2

For higher grade level students such as grade 4 and up, our
teaching order is section 4, 2 and 6

Note: (When we teach S. 2 and 6, it means we teach S.2 as the
main canvas and add skills from S.6 based on students’ needs and weakness)

AVOID spending more than half of the class time lecturing,
students will easily get bored and be off task.

AVOID only reading content from sections to students without
practicing. This is a writing class, yes, it is closely intertwined with
grammar, however, students learn the best when they are actively thinking,
writing, and making mistakes.

At the beginning of the lesson, quickly go over the writing goal
we are teaching today.

Now, explain to students what a healthy paragraph contains:

Get down to business: Quickly go over step one of writing a paragraph and ask students to practice.

Ask them to write each of the following three types of topic sentences in notebooks. Time students for each writing task.

When kids are done writing on their own, invite each kid to share his/ her writing,

Step 1: we NEED to type students’ answers on screen and edit for them.

Step 2: Ask this student to edit the writing in the notebook and move on to the next student and repeat the process.
