Course Description

This class is designed to teach 4-5 years old students in the matters of English Reading and Writing.  Every week we will focus on 5 vocabulary prefixes/suffixes that will enable students to determine meaning of multiple words and increase their vocabulary.  During the course we will cover three main types of writing: Informational, Narrative or storytelling, and Opinion Writing. We will also spend some time reading different passages that are good examples of these types of writing,

Knowledge and skills (What you’ll learn)

  • Students will learn about non-fiction , informational Books and the various types of writing.
  • Structure of an essay including introduction, thesis, body paragraphs and
    conclusion.
  • Write about History such as the Boston Tea Party, World War 2 and other important parts of history.
  • Write an informative essay paying close attention to the source of their findings.
  • Adding details and examples with a bibliography.
  • Understanding the Elements of a great story.
  • Drafting the informative essay : brainstorming, outlining, drafting.
  • Completion of the informative essay using editing and proof reading
    methods.

Course Breakdown:

Throughout the 10 lessons, we will be writing a short story / novel /narrative / creative piece of literature. However, we will take time to address different elements of writing during each lesson. There will also be “short story” activities and SAT grammar practice exercises.

Lesson 1: Organize information and ideas around a topic to plan and prepare to write.
Lesson 2: Engage and orient the reader by setting out a problem, situation, or observation and its significance, establishing one or multiple point(s) of view, and
introducing a narrator and/or characters; create a smooth progression of experiences or events.
Lesson 3: Develop and strengthen writing as needed by revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach, focusing on addressing what is most
significant for a specific purpose and audience.
Lesson 4: Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced,illustrated, and elaborated in a text .
Lesson 5: D Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, reflection, and multiple plot lines, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters.
Lesson 6: Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text in which the rhetoric is particularly effective, analyzing how style and content contribute to the
power, and/or persuasiveness of the text.
Lesson 7: Use precise words and phrases, telling details, and sensory language to convey a vivid picture of the experiences, events, setting, and/or characters.
Lesson 8: Use a variety of techniques to sequence events so that they build on one another to create a coherent whole and build toward a particular tone and
outcome.
Lesson 9: Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on what is experienced, observed, or resolved over the course of the narrative.

About the Teacher

Ms. Huma

Hi! My name is Huma. I am a certified elementary school teacher. I got my Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Toronto and my Master of Science degree from the University of London (U.K.)  I am also TESOL certified and hold additional qualifications in teaching kindergarten, students with special needs and English language learners. I have been teaching for over 23 years now.

I strive to know each of my student’s strengths and needs and then adjust the starting point for my teaching to match their abilities. This makes my lessons interesting and stimulating for every student and keeps them actively engaged in learning new things and become lifelong learners and problem solvers.

My teaching philosophy is a three-step process of “I do, you watch“, “Let us do it together”, “You do, I watch”. I provide my students with clear learning goals and instructions for each lesson.  I give them descriptive feedback on their efforts to help them improve and reach their full potential.
