The One and Only Ivan Reading Camp

This course will involve short lectures when the teacher explains literary terms and concepts. There will be lots of opportunity for students to interact with each other and the teacher as they discuss the chapter. 

The teacher will lead the discussion covering the plot, characters and setting, of the reading assignment.  We will also cover new vocabulary words

 

This is a tentative lesson plan.

 

 

CLASS 1:

Learn about the author, Katherine Applegate, and some general information about the book

Listen to the Teacher read Chapters 1-10

Discuss the theme of the book

Discuss the terms plot, characters, and setting as they relate to the book.

 

Homework:  Read chapters 10-25. 

                    

CLASS 2:

Discuss what happens in chapters 10-25.

Answer discussion questions using evidence from the text.

 

Homework: Read chapters 26-40. 

             

CLASS 3:

Discuss plot, setting, and characters in chapters 26-40.

Answer discussion questions using evidence from the text.

 

Homework:  Read chapters 41-55. 

                   

                

CLASS 4: 

Discuss plot, setting, and characters in chapter 41-55.

Answer discussion questions using evidence from the text.

 

Homework:  Read chapter  56-70. 

 

CLASS 5: 

Discuss plot, setting, and characters in chapter 56-70.

Answer discussion questions using evidence from the text.

 

Homework:  Read chapter 71-85. 

                  

 

CLASS 6: 

Discuss plot, setting, and characters in chapters 71-90.

Answer discussion questions using evidence from the text.

 

Homework:  Read chapter 90-108. 

      

 

CLASS 7: 

Discuss plot, setting, and characters in chapters 108-125.

Answer discussion questions using evidence from the text.

 

Homework:  A)  Read chapters 125-153. 

                     B) Write a one-page book report about the book. Include:

                          1) The title and author of the book

                          2) Write a one or two paragraph summary of the book

                          3) Write one paragraph describing your favorite part of the book      and tell why you liked it.

                          4) would you recommend this book to other people? Why or why not?

 

CLASS 8: 

Students will share parts of their book report with the class.

Discuss plot, setting, and characters in chapter 125-153.

Answer discussion questions using evidence from the text.
