Description

Description

AMC 10 is a difficult exam because the problems require students to be very creative under considerable time pressure. This lesson focuses on how to build and strengthen the student’s own creative response to the problem statement. The class focuses on comparing and contrasting problem statements and analyzing the decisions that lead to a successful solving strategy. A summary of theory is also presented, but with the same focus on connections, limits of applicability, common errors and sources of difficulty. In this way, the student is not merely exposed to another explanation of math topics, but to a roller-coaster of connections among them. Since the lecture is in the form of a Socratic dialogue, student participation is central. Students must be willing to put forward ideas, whether they ultimately prove to be useful or not.

The class is useful for students in grades 9 or 10, as well as for advanced students who are in grade 8.

Pre-requisites: Algebra II and Geometry.

Homework will be assigned and reviewed. Please plan to attend all classes.
