Debate Camp 101- Debate Discovery Camp

Debate is not just an academic pursuit – it’s used every day in real life and in school! So, how can you argue without becoming argumentative? With so many important issues facing students these days, learning how to advocate for your own position is becoming a vital academic and life skill! In Ustar’s Debate 101 Exploration Camp, students can learn how to express an opinion or take a stance on an issue that is important to them while elevating their public speaking skills by practicing debating skills and making claims based on logical reasoning in a fun, yet challenging atmosphere of teamwork and friendship. Students will participate in custom-designed training debates employing the fundamentals of constructing arguments and defending positions in competitive debate formats including Spontaneous Debates (SPAR), Public Forum Debate, and in real-world classroom and social discussions.

Debate Camp – Advanced Debate Enrichment Camp Featuring Spontaneous Argumentation (SPAR)

Week One

Advanced Debate Enrichment Camp embraces all of the themes in the 101 Debate Discovery Camp and takes a deeper dive into choosing evidence, documenting sources, studying logical reasoning, recognizing fallacies of reasoning, cross-examining opponents, delivering rebuttals, and other elements of Spontaneous Argumentation Debate.

While the class is custom designed to meet the needs of the students based on an initial day one pre-assessment, students should have some experience with debate terms and public speaking to make this experience more meaningful and enjoyable.

Debate Camp – Advanced Debate Enrichment Camp Featuring Public Forum Debate

Week Two

Advanced Debate Enrichment Camp embraces all of the themes in the 101 Debate Discovery Camp and takes a deeper dive into affirmative and negative debating skills and styles, logic and reasoning, and value and policy principles inherent in their position and why that position is superior to the opponent’s. Various types of debates will be introduced including Lincoln-Douglas and essential elements of Public Forum Debate.

While the class is custom designed to meet the needs of the students based on an initial day one pre-assessment, students should have some experience with debate terms and public speaking to make this experience more meaningful and enjoyable.
