Description

Course Overview:

Gaining confidence as an individual speaker by gaining more finite principals of various genres of public speaking such as impromptu speech, informative speech, persuasive speech, and argumentation.

Course Objectives:

Students will be able to recognize, compare and contrast, correctly format, and deliver formal speeches (informative, and persuasive). Students will be able to quickly organize thoughts for an impromptu speech. Students will also discover the basics in argumentation in order to begin preparation for the debate.  The bulk of learning will be attained through live evaluations and verbal feedback. Immediate instructor and peer evaluation is a proven learning technique in communication education and is a core competency in enhancing speech communications.

Lesson 1: In-depth exploration of vocal qualities

Lesson 2: Proper Organization of a Speech

Lesson 3: Intermediate understanding of Informative and Persuasive Speech
-Attention grabbers
-Accurate citing of sources
– Body of education and selling points
-Solid Conclusions and “closing the deal”

Lesson  4: Crafting effective Informative and Persuasive Speeches

Lesson  5: Informative/Persuasive Speeches
-Students present an informative and persuasive speech (specific speech will be individualized and  assigned by the teacher)
-Peer and instructor Evaluation

Lesson 6: Informative/Persuasive Speeches
-If the student gave an informative speech in the previous class, they will now give a persuasive speech and vice versa.
– The specific speech will be individualized and assigned by the teacher
– Peer/instructor evaluation
– Strong Conclusions and “closing the deal”

Lesson 7: Impromptu Speech
-Guidelines
-Preparation
– Organization
– Formulation of thought

Lesson 8:  Impromptu speeches
-Students will give impromptu speeches
– Peer and instructor evaluation

*Lesson timeline may be adapted or changed at the instructor’s discretion in order to accommodate competency or mastery of the material.

About the Teacher

Ms. Jimilee holds a Bachelors Degree in Speech Communications and Theatre. While in college, she competed nationally as a member of the debate team. She has spent the last 20 years working in live theatre as an actress, director, and designer. She also spent time in the classroom as a teacher of drama, speech, and debate for grades K-12.

During her time in education in Texas, she was a UIL coach for middle and high school one act play, and advanced to state for the 1st time is the school’s history. She also coached 3rd-6th grade storytelling, impromptu speaking, and oral interpretation, where the majority of her students took home medals. Her hobbies include golf, softball, cross-stitching, Greek mythology, and puzzles.
